Agriculture (ecological) ___________________________________________
There are a number of organic growers, large and small, in the region. Some urban residents are members of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) groups.

The Organic Producers Association of Manitoba (OPAM) is a member-owned, independent certification body that is affiliated with the Canadian Organic Advisory Board (COAB), certifying over 100 growers and processors of organic food in the provinces of Manitoba and Saskachewan. They provide an online directory for certified products.

Community Supported Agriculture. - CSA's (also called Shared Farming) are where a group of folks buy seasonal shares of a farmer's produce, in essence, they have a stake in the farm. An effective way to reduce the ecological footprint from your food is by growing your own (organic, natural gardening/farming, etc). If that's not an option for you, try to find a "Community Supported Agriculture" farm near you. This will also put you back in touch with your local natural resources. Canada's national membership-based education and networking organization representing farmers, gardeners and consumers in all provinces. See place study on local CSAs.

It is an excellent place for walking, bird watching, horseback riding and cross country skiing. The forest is composed of a network of natural and woodchipped trails and the Sagimay trail, a paved section. At the end of the Sagimay trail lies a marsh and viewing mound, named for Eve Werier, a dedicated naturalist of the area. On the south end of the forest lies the Harte trail, a section of the Trans Canada Trail which leads all the way to Beaudry Park.

Light rail transit__________________________________________________

Winnipeg used to have a good street car system serving various neighbourhoods. Early neighbourhoods were built around streetcar routes, for example Osborne Village and Corydon. An inter-urban electric railway lines connected centres in the region, for example Selkirk and Stonewall, and serving cottage communities on Lake Winnipeg. See the summary of public Transit History in Winnipeg. A Rapid Bus Transit network has been under consideration and delayed for some years. The rail right of way west of Route 42 Pembina Hwy is designated in Plan Winnipeg as a rail or high speed bus corridor. Others argue a rapid bus line along the centre of Pembina Hwy makes more sense as this would strengthen transit oriented development more evenly along the route.

Husky Mohawk: has long supplied 10% blend of ethanol produced from grain refined at their expanded plant at Minnedosa MB. To increase its use, Manitoba legislation requires ethanol to be blended with most gasoline sold in the province, with an average of 5%. In April 2008, this will average will increase to 8.5%.

Biodiesel: Biodiesel, a cleaner burning fuel than regular diesel, has gained interest from both potential producers and from consumers. There is one biodiesel plant in Manitoba at Arborg, and four more, including two in Winnipeg, have received environmental licences and could be producing fuel within a year. In later 2008 there will be a plant at la Broquerie powering a custom meat processing operation, combined with a wind turbine. There is considerable potential for small scale biodiesel plants in Manitoba. The Winnipeg-based Canadian International Grains Institute has been giving courses across the country on biodiesel production with the aid of a $60,000 portable fuel-making unit. Economic viability of this is closely tied to the price of canola and other feedstock.

Infrastructure:

Energy generating (grid) facility _____________________________________

Winnipeg for many years supplied a large part of the city, through its Municipal Hydro-Electric System. Winnipeg Hydro was sold to Manitoba Hydro. Electric power rates continue to be among the lowest in North America. Many argue this low pricing inhibits adoption of energy efficiency and alternative energy source technology.

Water: (source, retention, flood, waste treatment)

For a description of variety of ways water is handled and present in the city: "Water Colours of Winnipeg" in more detail.
Source and supply________________________________________________

City water supply is via an 160 km aquaduct since 1919 from Shoal Lake, at the Manitoba-Ontario boundary. A complex system of pipes, pumps and reservoirs was constructed to distribute the water throughout the city. Once used, the wastewater was formerly released directly into the City's rivers, without treatment. Water supply is adequate for a city of one million inhabitants. A $200 million water filtration treatment plant is to be on line by 2006. For a description of the "urban water quality and Shoal Lake".
Catchment and Retention________________________________________

Storm water retention basins (over 70 servicing 7,700 ha.) are common in Winnipeg area due to the clay soils, high water table and level topography. They improve urban water quality by reducing runoff and contamination. Catchment Statistics: Lift Stations: 72, Flood Pumping Stations: 32, Wastewater Sewers: Combined/interceptors: 1179Km 10,500Ha (40%), Seperate: 1182Km 17,300Ha (60%), Total: 2361Km 27,800Ha (100%), Land Drainage (seperate) sewers: About 1000Km, 90 major outfalls, serving about 10,000Ha.

Wastewater Treatment plant________________________________________
In Winnipeg, about 2400 kilometres of sewers and interceptors, and 72 pumping stations are needed to carry wastewater to the water pollution control centres. Paul Lagasse, Wastewater Engineer with City of Winnipeg Water and Waste Department has prepared a website describing the wastewater treatment facilities and processes used in Winnipeg. A city map shows the areas of combined and separate sewers, and provides the location and photos of each of the three water pollution control centres North End Water Pollution Control Centre (NEWPCC) treating 70% of Winnipeg's wastewater, West End Water Pollution Control Centre (WEWPCC) in Charleswood and the South End Water Pollution Control Centre (SEWPCC) in St.Vital. The processes are clearly described and illustrated. See: Waste water treatment...
Approximately 40% of the city is still serviced with Combined Sewers, which discharge diluted wastewater to the rivers during significant rainstorm events. The City treats over 90% of all the wastewater generated in the City. The Collection System is also responsible for the important function of Flood Pumping during the annual high river event.

Composting____________________________________________________
Winnipeg initiated voluntary curbside pick up of yard waste, grass, leaves to be composted at the Brady Road landfill into topsoil for landscaping. The fist program targeted 10,000 homes, collected separately from garbage and blue box recyclables every two weeks. It is estimated this represents one quarter to one third of waste in residential areas. Program to monitor the amount of waste diverted from the dump and the participation rates. Environmental impacts of a full scale yard waste collection program will be considered by city council at end of year.

Incinerator _______________________________________________________
There is no 'garbage' incineration facility in Winnipeg. (Although on occassion a fire could inadvertanly break out at the landfill.) Hospitals often incinerate medical waste safely at controlled high termperatures. There are no large scale examples of waste to energy (via combustion), although some businesses may have onsite incineration technology and heating system derived from part of their wastestream. An example in Steinbach is Loewen Windows.

Redevelopment opportunity site____________________________________
There are a number of sites that have high potential for redevelopment. Certrainly rail yards that divide neighburhoods could be claimed for infill development. Fort Rouge Yards along Pembina and the CP yards dividing the North End offer high potential for infill, redevelopment and connectivity to 'heal these urban wounds'.

Waterfront Drive -
This area has been a collection of bleak parking lots and warehouses, the city anticipates the new developments along Waterfront Drive will induce further investment and more people to this part of the downtown. The goal is to surround it with interesting buildings and opportunities that mix housing, entertainment, commercial uses and open space. A Design Competition in spring 2002 presented the profile of the area to nurture the idea of interesting, adaptive re-use in the heritage district. Competition winners were announced during the RAIC Festival of Architecture. Prizes totalled $55,000 from the Heritage Investment Reserve. A public exhibition occured at the Millennium Centre, 389 Main St. A number of new residential and some mixed-use projects have occured or underway.

Monitoring / research site_______________________________________

There are a number of sites that were once disturbed but are now being monitored and some remediated by ecological management to remove contamination in soils and buildings on site. A growing number of techniques and experimental practices are being used. Bioremediation, a method of recovery variously using plants, bacteria, fungi, reconstructed wetlands and moving water, may be used to clean up contaminated or polluted soils, waterways etc. by employing natural processes and systems. There are many sites, in the process or that have been remediated, throughout Winnipeg.

The City of Winnipeg Laboratory Services Division routinely monitors city rivers and streams. This work includes studies on the quality of river water and the impact of wastewater released from the treatment plants on the water in the City's rivers. These studies show that Winnipeg's efforts to control pollution of the City's rivers from wastewater and sewage have improved the quality of river water. Today, there is abundant aquatic life in the city's rivers which was not there in the 1930's. See "Combined Sewers at Water and Waste City of Winnipeg. The city is committed to improvements in storm and wastewater management. The Sierra Club, which evaluates how cities handle their waste, gave Winnipega B grade in 2004 up from a C in 1999.

Air pollution source___________________________________________
Autos are the major contributor within the city. Manitoba Hydro has closed the coal fired power plant at Selkirk and will soon shut down the last one at Brandon. For major pollutors, see 'Mining Site' at Province scale.
Water pollution source________________________________________
Includes things like a specific factory's pollution stream or an inadequate sewage treatment plant. Sometimes, these are non-point sources, such as hydrocarbon run off from paved roads or a farm animal wastes and/or chemical fertilizers drain to drinking water supplies.
