Urban Streams and Habitat: Sturgeon Creek

Introduction

Sturgeon Creek

Sturgeon Creek, the largest of Winnipeg's four creeks, is located in the west end of Winnipeg. As part of the Assinboine River water system, Sturgeon Creek flows from its head waters in the rural municipalities of Rosser and Headingley through the city of Winnipeg to the Assiniboine River. North of Saskatchewan Avenue the creek is bounded mostly by agricultural land. South of Saskatchewan Avenue the land surrounding the creek is mostly developed, although efforts have been made to naturalize and preserve the banks of the river.

Sturgeon Creek acts as a surface drainage channel for rural and urban runoff. It is an important drainage outlet for a large agricultural area and urban development in the surrounding community. In addition to these practical purposes, Sturgeon Creek is an attractive feature enjoyed by residents of the surrounding neighbourhoods.

The lower portion descends rapidly to the Assiniboine River.

Sturgeon Ceek is only navigable in its upper portion during spring runoff or extreme storm event.
The bridge provides adequate clearance to be navigable but the footing design is a barrier to animals moving along the stream corridor edge.
