WELCOME
The St Norbert Farmer’s market, the largest outdoor market in Winnipeg, is located just south of the Perimeter Hwy, on Pembina Hwy in St Norbert. Aside from produce, the market features a variety of locally-produced goods, such as flowers, baking, crafts, and meat products, in addition to showcasing local musical and artistic talent. The market also provides space for non-profit groups to set up information booths about their local initiatives. Since the market first opened 14 years ago, it has grown into a vibrant and successful gathering place for families, with as many as 100 vendors on any given Saturday. The participants of this co-operative farmers market also follow the motto of Make it, Bake it, or Grow it. This motto emphasizes the importance of having only locally-produced goods at the market. (Manitoba Recreational Trails Association Inc, 2004; Kletke, 2004)
Farmers markets offer several valuable benefits for the environment and the community as a whole. Some benefits are that they promote urban agriculture, increase awareness about organic farming practices, provide a positive economic impact on the local economy and producers, and act as an arena for social gathering and interaction. The St Norbert Farmers Market is no exception to this, and the following pages will explore each of these benefits in greater detail.
