WELCOME

Every hour, more than enough solar radiation strikes the earth to supply all of mankind’s energy needs for a year. Solar energy is energy in the form of light, or radiation, from the sun falling upon the Earth's surface. This is an enormous energy potential that is being virtually ignored in Winnipeg and other parts of the world. Solar energy is free and completely renewable, and over the past 30 years, the cost of capturing this energy has declined. Winnipeg receives an average of 2321 hours of sun every year, more than most other Canadian cities. There are a couple different types of solar technologies in use in Winnipeg to capture the sun’s energy: photovoltaic systems, passive and hot water solar systems. There are many other types of solar technologies, but I will limit this project to what’s in Winnipeg.

Solar radiation map for Canada. The darker the colour, the more solar radiation that falls on that spot in an average year.
