WELCOME

Wahbung Abinoonjiiag is Ojibway meaning Children of Tomorrow is located at Address: 225 Dufferin Avenue at King Street. The 6500 sf. building was designed to express the teachings of the medicine wheel and reflect the sacred symbol of the turtle in the qulaity of space and building program. Abinoonjiiag is a model of sustainability and the building pushes environmental and energy-efficient technology to the limit, including the use of walls made from straw bales, ground source heating, and recycled materials.

OVERVIEW

This building was realized in a very short period. Time from concept development to completed drawings was one month. The facility opened in December 2004.

The designers are Mike Robertson and Richard Kula of Prairie Architects and Richard Gamble – green building commissioner, from Red River College. Kris Dick was consultant for the strawbale wall design and construction.

The facility program includes information and resource centre, offices, kindergarten and multi-functional common space, with two residential units on the second floor. The residential units provide emergency shelter for mother and children seeking refuge from a dysfunctional domestic scene. Each unit has adjoining open kitchen, dining, living room area, bathroom, three bedrooms (2 for children, 1 for adult), and small terrace. The spaces are full height ceilings. These share a common central area having laundry. The building has security provisions consistent with type of services provided and clients requirements.
