Public Green Roofs in Downtown Winnipeg

GREEN ROOFS

Centennial Library Park:

Centennial Library Park is owned by the City of Winnipeg and is partially built over an underground parking garage.  It is home to a variety of trees and shrubs that maintain its appeal year round as well as a major fountain system that adds interest during the summer months.  The large rooftop gives its users an alluring location for spring, summer and fall lunches, meetings and breaks.  Undoubtedly a break from the surrounding pavement and concrete, the plantings allow for microclimate modification during the extreme temperatures of the summer months, absorb excess rainwater, insulates noise from surrounding traffic, filters the air of pollution and provides a pleasing aesthetic for its users. The plantings also provide an urban habitat for local species of flora, fauna, birds and insects.

Centennial Library Park will remain unchanged during the Millineum Library renovations. It is expected that more people will use the space once the library renovations are completed.

A view of Centennial Library Park illustrates the connective pathways that meander throughout the site. Seating, nightime lighting and a reflecting pond all add to the garden's attractiveness.
