Public Green Roofs in Downtown Winnipeg

GREEN ROOFS

Winnipeg Art Gallery:

The Winnipeg Art Gallery' s large outdoor courtyard, covering a large portion of the roof, was designed in 1971 by Gustav deRosa.  The plantings include trees, shrubs, seasonal flowers, a variety of sculptures and a large reflecting pool and fountain.  It serves the Bridgeport Restaurant with a beautiful view from an unexpected place but is utilized most in the summer months for a concert series, Jazz on the Rooftop, weddings and parties.  With its many sculptures it brings to the art gallery an additional space to showcase their collections.  Because the art gallery is a private building many do not know that the rooftop garden is considered a green roof or know of the implications and benefits that it may have on the urban environment it is located in.
