While the organic food sector in Canada is not developing as quickly as its U.S. counterpart, sales of organic are increasing by 20% a year, and organic products now represent 1-2% of the retail sector, as reported by the major organic food distributors of Canada (2). Increased sales are largely attributed to the wide availability of organic products in major grocery store chains. The number of smaller, independent retailers offering organic products has increased as well. In Winnipeg , there are over 37 stores and restaurants which offer a variety of organic produce, meats, and meals (3).
