Introduction:
The name Pollock Island is somewhat misleading because what is coined an island is actually a temporary phenomenon that occurs with the rising floodwaters each spring. The Red and La Salle rivers rise each spring, creating an “island” of sorts. The property can be accessed at the end of Pierre St. along an old access road that is slowly being destructed by river erosion.
The area sits on a 16-acre property donated to the city of Winnipeg by Iris Pollock and family under the Federal Eco gift program. The property itself is natural, untouched river bottom forest home to an abundance of wildlife and plant species. In addition, there is a great view of the Red River Floodway gates. Area residents are working to restore sections of the habitat to its natural state as traditional fishing grounds. Located in a naturally occurring river bottom forest, the estate will soon serve as a community park for residents and as a natural area for local habitat.
Pollock Island Pathway is part of the St. Norbert Heritage Trails system and is open year round to trail users, with guided tour options as well. The walk is approximately 2.5km of natural grass surface with offshoots linking to other pathways.
