Canadian Mennonite University:

Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) is a Christian University that offers programming in the arts, music, theology and church ministry with over 2,000 students enrolled. CMU's 44-acre campus is located in southwest Winnipeg at the edge of the Assiniboine Forest on Grant Avenue.  It is within walking distance of Assiniboine Park, Winnipeg's largest public park. Three colleges were amalgamated to form CMU: MBBC/Concord College, CMBC and Menno Simons College.

In September of 2007, Canadian Mennonite University opened the doors to its new ‘green’ residence. In an interview discussing the new residence David Leis, Vice President for Advancement said, “CMU teaches students about the importance of caring for the environment, about not wasting resources and being mindful of the needs of poor people around the world, and the new residence is a practical way for us to put our words into action.” This speaks to the teachings of environmental stewardship in the classroom and the practical applications of these values in every day life.

The building, designed by Friesen Tokar architects, is a three-story, 30,000 square foot student residence that houses 101 students in a combination of floor plans. A primary feature of the new building is the geothermal heating and cooling system.  The 42-unit building features a closed loop ground source heat pump as well as water conserving fixtures and energy efficient lighting.  These features in combination make the residence one of Manitoba’s greenest buildings based on the National Energy Code and LEED standards.
