Winnipeg Farmers Markets:

There are a number of Farmers Markets here in Winnipeg. The two big ones are the St Nobert Farmers’ Market and Exchange district Farmers’ Market. (See the attached maps for locations) There are also a number of smaller Farmers’ Markets including a new market at Pineridge Hollow north of the city on Highway 59 and Garven road on Saturday mornings in the summer and another just West of the city at the Red River Exhibition site off Portage Avenue. (Creighton 2005) There is also reportedly another in the South Osborne area of Winnipeg.

The St. Norbert Farmers Market is open from late June to early October, on Wednesdays from 3pm to dusk and Saturdays from 8am to 3pm.The St Norbert Farmer’s market, the largest outdoor market in Winnipeg, is located just south of the Perimeter Hwy, on Pembina Hwy in St Norbert. (849 De L'Eglise, tel: 275-8349)  (Pembina Hwy, about 1/2 km south of the perimeter in St. Norbert) Aside from produce, the market features a variety of locally-produced goods, such as flowers, baking, crafts, and meat products, in addition to showcasing local musical and artistic talent. The market also provides space for non-profit groups to set up information booths about their local initiatives. Since the market first opened 15 years ago, it has grown into a vibrant and successful gathering place for families, with as many as 100 vendors on any given Saturday. The participants of this co-operative farmers market also follow the motto of “Make it, Bake it, or Grow it”. This motto emphasizes the importance of having only locally-produced goods at the market. (Manitoba Recreational Trails Association Inc, 2004; Kletke, 2004)

In contrast with the St. Nobert Farmers’ Market which has been in operation for 15 years the Exchange District Farmers’ Market has only just been revived in the last four years. Located in at the corner of King and Bannatyne in Old Market Square in the Exchange District, the market comes alive every Saturday in August and September. The Exchange District Farmers’ Market is a one-stop destination for locally grown produce and hand-crafted items. The market is open from 9 am to 3 pm featuring Manitoba-grown produce and meat products. The market also offers a wide variety of arts & crafts, home baking, handmade jewellery & body products, and the wares of local merchants. If you are interested in booking a table during the market or for more information, call 942-6716 or email info@exchangedistrict.org for more details. (Sholle 2005)(Destination Winnipeg 2006)

Farmers’ Markets generally offer a wide selection of vegetables and fruits providing a healthier diet while supporting local farmers! For more detailed description of some of other many benefits of farmers’ markets please read on.
