Get walking:
Walking is a great way to promote better health - not only is it a fun way to get outside, but it is also a good way to exercise and visit with friends. As part of a regular exercise program, walking helps to reduce stress, increase energy, and can help prevent heart disease, osteoporosis and some cancers (Active 2010). It’s also an excellent way to get to know Winnipeg, to see different neighbourhoods, and to build a better connection with the natural environment!
To start walking in Winnipeg or in Manitoba, get yourself a good pair of hiking shoes, and pick up one of Prairie Pathfinders’ guidebooks at a local bookseller. The books are also available from the Winnipeg Public Library.
To get involved with the Prairie Pathfinders, check out their website: www.prairiepathfinders.mb.ca, which includes a calendar of events, as well as information on how to register for events. There is a small annual membership fee which helps to cover some of the administrative costs for the group. One of their most popular walks is a special one arranged in January each year to experience the Seine River corridor in winter.
