Winnipeg Bicycle Organizations:
There are two additional bicycle advocacy groups in the city of Winnipeg, Bike to the Future, and Spin. Bike to the Future is a group which is operated under the direction of volunteers and is composed primarily of cyclists concerned with the current state of cycling in the city of Winnipeg. The group works to “make cycling in Winnipeg a safe, enjoyable, accessible and convenient transportation choice year-round.” (Bike to the Future (2006).
Spin is a relatively new group of cyclists with similar objectives as Critical Mass. However, the manner in which they are promoting bicycling in the city is occurring in a much different fashion, with organized rides that have been sanctioned by the city of Winnipeg that are widely promoted to draw riders. The overall goal of the group is “to paint a more accurate picture of the cycling community and its serious concerns about the state of the cycling infrastructure in Winnipeg” as opposed to the radical techniques used by Critical Mass to raise awareness (SPIN, 2006). The group’s first organized ride took place on September 6, 2006 under the operation of a parade permit and followed a planned route. In attendance were approaximately 100 participants including city councilors Jenny Gerbasi and Mike Pagtakhan and former councilor Donald Benham (King, T., 2006, September 7)
For more information on either organization please refer to the contacts, links, and references page.
Conclusion
Critical Mass, SPIN, and Bike to the Future are three examples of groups who have committed to promoting a more sustainable mode of transportation. The organizations have raised awareness around an issue that continues to be problematic for western culture and society. It is integral for such groups to receive the needed attention and support to ensure they are able to continue to raise awareness of issues related to active and alternative transportation and transportation networks.
