Corner Gertrude & Daly:

The new condominium being constructed at the corner of Gertrude Avenue and Daly Street could be the first LEED Platinum building in Manitoba.  Currently, Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) has the highest LEED certification with a Gold rating.  The new Manitoba Hydro building is also aiming for a Platinum rating but the condo developer is hoping to finish first.

Designed and built by Walter Development Corp., the condo will have 5 units and a total of 5,000 square feet of space.  The target is 54 points (Platinum is 52).  Some of the elements ideally being incorporated into the new building are using the old radiators as bathroom towel warmers, recycling and reusing lumber from the old building, growing prairie grasses on 90% of the roof and collecting rainwater to use in the toilets.  This place study is worth updating as construction continues and is hopefully completed by the end of 2007.
