GREEN MAP Culture and Design: Ft. Whyte Aquaponics
|
Outreach: There is great potential for aquaponic systems to augment food supply in northern communities, to become part of community gardens, to encourage wider spread adoption of urban agriculture and to reduce the cost of organic food production, by eliminating the need for fertilizers. A compact ten gallon fish tank aquaponics system was recently built and displayed at the Forks. A system of this size could be built for under $100. Fort Whyte currently operates youth outreach programs with groups of primarily inner city youth. The programs provide five groups of students the opportunity to plant their own crops and harvest them a week later to bring home. The program instills a sense of ownership and promotes knowledge of local agriculture and appreciation of ecological systems. |
