LEED airport examples:
There are very few LEED certified airports in the world. Two of these projects are currently in development in the United States. They are Boston International Airport, Terminal A and Indianapolis Aiport. Both have been designed by Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum Architects. The following is a summary of design principles used in each project for LEED certification.
Boston International Airport Terminal A
- Storm water filtration
- Reflective membrane to keep the building cooler during the summer
- 50% reduction in water use for landscaping
- 30% reduction in water use in washrooms through low-water toilets and waterless urinals
- Use of natural daylight and automatic lighting controls
- 10% recycled building materials
- 20% local construction materials
- Air quality controls during construction
- Low emitting materials such as paints and carpet.
- Facility recycling
Indianapolis Airport
- Extensive use of natural light
- Roofing membrane reflects heat & sun but allows substantial light to pass.
- Roof design promotes natural cooling
- Roof will channel rainwater for reuse
- Integration with public transport
- Reduction of water use in washrooms
- Highly efficient heating/cooling systems
- Energy efficient HVAC system
- Reuse of old building materials
- Timber is from sustainable forests
- Electric airport vehicles where possible
- Low emitting materials such as paints and carpet.
- Facility recycling (material from the former building were reused)
