    LEED airport examples:

There are very few LEED certified airports in the world. Two of these projects are currently in development in the United States. They are Boston International Airport, Terminal A and Indianapolis Aiport. Both have been designed by Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum Architects. The following is a summary of design principles used in each project for LEED certification.

Boston International Airport – Terminal A

    • Storm water filtration
    • Reflective membrane to keep the building cooler during the summer
    • 50% reduction in water use for landscaping
    • 30% reduction in water use in washrooms through low-water toilets and waterless urinals
    • Use of natural daylight and automatic lighting controls
    • 10% recycled building materials
    • 20% local construction materials
    • Air quality controls during construction
    • Low emitting materials such as paints and carpet.
    • Facility recycling

    Indianapolis Airport

    • Extensive use of natural light
    • Roofing membrane reflects heat & sun but allows substantial light to pass.
    • Roof design promotes natural cooling
    • Roof will channel rainwater for reuse
    • Integration with public transport
    • Reduction of water use in washrooms
    • Highly efficient heating/cooling systems
    • Energy efficient HVAC system
    • Reuse of old building materials
    • Timber is from sustainable forests
    • Electric airport vehicles where possible
    • Low emitting materials such as paints and carpet.
    • Facility recycling (material from the former building were reused)
