New Winnipeg Airport Terminal - LEED Certified

Airport Redevelopment:

The Winnipeg Airport Authority is currently building a new terminal to replace the current one built over 40 years ago. This $600 million project is slated for completion in 2009 and includes a four-level adjacent parkade. What makes this development unique is that it will attempt to become the first LEED certified airport in Canada and one of the few LEED certified airports in the world.

The new terminal is currently being built northeast of the existing building. If no suitable use can be found for the old terminal, it may be torn down. The new terminal will cost approximately $350 million with the remainder of the project cost devoted to the parkade, tarmac, runways, drainage and infrastructure. Long-term plans will see the land surrounding the airport being developed into a commercial, industrial, warehouse and transmodal hub. The architects behind the new terminal are Stantec Architecture, Vancouver and Cesar Pelli and Associates, New Haven, Connecticut.

Funding for the project comes from a $15 Airport Improvement Fee surcharge on all tickets sold and a $250 million privately issued bond. An additional $75,000 came from the province’s Sustainable Development Innovation Fund for the LEED certification process.

When the original terminal was built, it was designed to accommodate 1 million passengers per year. Since then, passenger volume has grown to 3 million annually. In 2006, 140 million kilograms of cargo was shipped through the airport representing a cargo volume growth of 53% over the past 5 years. This made the Winnipeg Airport the second fastest growing airport cargo hub in North America. The economic impact of the Winnipeg Airport is estimated at $2.6 billion.
