Manitoba Hydro's Power Smart Program

Achievements:

In 2005 alone, Manitobans saved $22 million on their energy bills through Power Smart. Those energy savings have also spared the environment more than 707 300 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. "In December 2005, Manitoba was recognized by an international organization, The Climate Group for its leadership in fighting climate change. The province was named a 'Low Carbon Leader of the Decade' reflecting in part lower emissions of greenhouse gases brought about by energy saving Power Smart Manitobans" (9). The Canadian Energy Efficiency Alliance awarded the Province of Manitoba and A in its Fifth Annual National Report card on Energy Efficiency, the highest grade in the country. The well-designed integration of the provincial government's energy efficiency activities and Manitoba Hydro's comprehensive Power Smart programming resulted in Manitoba being recognized as the leading province in Canada. Manitoba Hydro was presented the 2005 ENERGY STAR Market Transformation Award in the Promotional Campaign of the Year category. The award recognizes Hydro's promotion of the Power Smart compact Fluorescent Lighting Program and Corporation's participation in Natural Resources Canada's national Switch and Save campaign.
